The rules for writing technical publications using the open-access aviation-industry database are regulated by S1000D international specification. It was developed by the AeroSpace and Defense Industries Association of Europe (ASD) in cooperation with the US Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) and the Air Transport Association of America (ATA), which together formed the Technical Publications Specification Maintenance Group (TPSMG), in order to develop unified documentation standards approved by all member states.
Compliance with S1000D specification is mandatory in NATO countries, Europe and North America. Moreover, this specification governs the use of Simplified Technical English in accordance with the ASD-STE100 specification, which must be taken into account when translating these documents.
